WINTER DRIVING TIPS IN KIPLING, SK
It’s that time of year again. Snow is falling, ice is forming, and the roads are slippery. Driving in the winter doesn’t have to be stressful. Keep reading to learn some winter driving tips to help you confidently conquer the roads this season!
BEFORE YOU START DRIVING
PUT ON YOUR SEATBELT
As you learned the first time you get into a car, putting on your seatbelt can save your life. Although this tip may be obvious, it’s essential to wear your seatbelt every time you are in a moving vehicle.
TURN ON YOUR LIGHTS
Ensuring that your lights are on can play a big part in your visibility and the visibility of your vehicle to others on the road. Especially if precipitation is falling, be sure to have your lights switched on.
CLEAR YOUR VIEW
Be sure to clear any ice and snow accumulated on your vehicle. Not only will this ensure you have a clear view of the road and others around you, but it can also avoid distractions and damage to others if the snow or ice falls off your vehicle while driving.
BE PREPARED
Be sure to pack an emergency kit in your vehicle, just in case. Your emergency kit should have gloves, hats, a blanket, a first aid kit, booster cables, a flashlight, batteries, a phone charger, a small shovel, and anything else to help you stay safe in an emergency.
WHILE YOU’RE DRIVING
KEEP A FULL TANK OF GAS
Ensuring that your vehicle constantly has a full tank (or close to that) can help you if you are stuck on the side of the road in an emergency. Having your vehicle running can keep you warm and allow you to charge your phone in case you need to call for help.
BRAKE SAFELY
Knowing how to brake safely during inclement weather can make a big difference. Be sure to leave more than a normal distance between you and the car in front of you, paying close attention to the road ahead. Also, if your vehicle is slipping or skidding, apply the brakes hard and focus on steering, never removing your foot off the brake pedal.
